README.TXT for the THESAURUS VIEWER -- August 24, 2006 (with minor changes for version 3.0) PLEASE REFER TO THE USER MANUAL FOR INFORMATION ON THE OPERATION OF THE VIEWER AND FOR AN OVERVIEW OF THE THESAURUS. Section A describes installation options. Section B contains general information. Section C describes possible problems and suggests workarounds. Section D tells how to remove the Viewer from your system. Section E gives a history of Viewer development. ***---------------------------------------------------------*** Section A: Installation Options Where to install the Thesaurus Viewer and the TRT data files is a matter of choice. By default, the program and data files will be installed in directory C:\TRT. If an earlier version is present, the installation progam will detect the presence of the Borland Database Engine and will not reinstall it unless you explicitly check the install box for it. 1. To replace an existing installation a. Either delete the directory where the TRT is now installed, or run the uninstall program from the Control Panel applet Add/Remove programs. b. Run the setup program from the CDROM. 2. To install Version 'n' w/o removing an earlier version a. Run the setup program from the CDROM and when it asks where to install the files, specify a different directory. We suggest using directory d:\TRTn where 'd:' is the drive where you want the files to be installed, and 'n' is the version number.. ***---------------------------------------------------------*** Section B: General Information 1. The Viewer uses the Borland Database Engine to access the database files that make up the thesaurus. The setup program will examine your system and mark the Database Engine files for installation if a version is not already installed. If you have any products from Borland or Corel on your system, the files might already be present. The setup program will allow you to override the defaults. Users of earlier versions of the Viewer may already have these files installed, and can accept the choices made by the installation program. The Database Engine files may be installed in different locations, the most likely being in directory \Borland\Common Files\BDE. 2. In addition to the program and database files, ten files will be installed in the directory chosen for storage. The directory used is \TRT unless the location was changed during installation. These files are: README.TXT This file. TRTMANL.TXT User Manual in ASCII format. TRTOUTL.TXT Abbreviated outline of the hierarchy. TRTAUTH.TXT File of thesaurus terms and notations, intended primarily for use as an authority file in automated systems. File is sorted alphabetically by term text. TRTHIER.TXT File of the full Hierarchical View, including UFs, SNs, and RTs to other facets. We suggest a Courier 10 pt font for printing. TRTKWOC.TXT File of the full KWOC View. We suggest a Courier 10 pt font for printing. TRTIDEN.TXT Example file of identifiers used by TRIS. TRTGEOG.TXT Example file of place names used by TRIS. TRNEWS.TXT An article about the TRT from the TRNews of 6/99 published by the Transportation Research Board. HELP.TXT Repeats the help data from the online Viewer program. On the distribution CDROM are three additional files that will be of interest for specialized collections. These 'mini' thesauri were created by the authors of the TRT. Users interested in mini-thesauri for other areas should contact David Batty of CDB Enterprises at the address below. The files are just the hierarchy for each thesaurus. No KWOC or alphabetical display is included, and these files are not compatible with the Thesaurus Viewer program. ITSHIER.TXT PATH thesaurus created by Michael Kleiber and Seyem Petrites for Intelligent Transportation Systems documentation. WKZNHIER.TXT Work Zone Safety thesaurus created for the Texas Transportation Institute by Michael Kleiber and Sandra Tucker. CALMHIER.TXT Traffic Calming thesaurus created for the Institute of Transportation Engineers by David Batty. 3. File extensions used for distribution files: .DBF files are the thesaurus database files. .MDX files are the indices to the database files. .TXT files are ASCII files that can be loaded into NOTEPAD, WORDPAD or a word processing program. .INI files contain information to control operation of the Viewer 4. Using the Viewer with Other Programs The ability to place multiple terms onto the clipboard so that they can be pasted into other programs requires that the Viewer program place the proper separator characters between terms. See the User Manual, section J.20 for details on how to right-click the mouse or use function keys to place terms on the clipboard. The separator characters now supported are: DOS style carriage return and line feed (x'1310') UNIX style line feed only (x'10') BASIS style semicolon and a space ('; ') Other types of separators can be programmed into the Viewer on request to Paul Rosenberg of Information Designs Limited. The default separator style is DOS. To change to one of the other styles, edit the TV.INI file (located in the same directory as the TV.EXE program file) to remove the semicolon that preceeds the desired style (called a 'Target'), and add a semicolon before the DOS target. The contents of the TV.INI file as shipped are: [ClipBoard] Target=DOS ;Target=UNIX ;Target=BASIS 5. The CDROM version can be used to make floppy disks for installation on systems without a CDROM drive. Copy the contents of directories DISK1 through DISK6 to 1.44 mb floppy disks. Label the disks to match, insert DISK1 into a floppy drive, and type A:\setup.exe at a DOS prompt. Follow the instructions of the installation program from that point. 6. Suggestions for improvements are welcome. Please direct ideas for the Viewer program to: Paul Rosenberg Information Designs Limited 11032 Wickshire Way Rockville, MD 20852-3223 voice: 301/564-6648 email: PAUL@INFODESIGNS.COM Term changes/additions/deletions should be directed to: David Batty CDB Enterprises 11608 Gilsan Street Silver Spring, MD 20902-3123 voice: 301/593-8901 fax: 301/593-1867 email: DAVIDBATTY@AOL.COM ***---------------------------------------------------------*** Section C: Possible Problems 1. Text is too large and does not fit in the display area, or controls are misplaced. This problem should only occur if you have specified LARGE FONTS for the Windows video driver. For most users this will be true only with a large monitor (over 17"), or when operating at very high resolutions. The work-around is to switch to SMALL FONTS while using the Viewer. To make the switch in WINDOWS 95 or 98, right click on the DESKTOP then click on PROPERTIES or (from the CONTROL PANEL) click on DISPLAY. Now, click on the SETTINGS tab near the top right of the DISPLAY PROPERTIES window, then click on the FONT SIZE control near the bottom. Select SMALL FONTS and then click on OK. You may need to reboot Windows for the change to take effect. 2. The Viewer has not been tested with Windows 2000, or with Windows XP. No problems have been reported. If you encounter a problem running the Viewer on a Windows 2000 or Windows XP system, please contact Paul Rosenberg at the address below. ***---------------------------------------------------------*** Section D: Removing the Viewer and its database files To remove the Viewer and the Transportation Research Thesaurus from the system, go to the Windows Control Panel, and click on the Add/Remove programs icon. Select Thesaurus Viewer and click on the Add/Remove button. It may request permission to delete programs and files that that belong to the Borland Database Engine. We suggest answering NO to these prompts, because other programs on your system may need them. ***---------------------------------------------------------*** Section E: History of the Viewer Version 3.0 September, 2005 Changes in data files only, none to the Viewer program. Version 2.0 June 8, 2000 Minor changes to the Viewer to correspond to TRT Version 2.0. Fixed a problem in the way terms are copied to the clipboard from the full family display. Public Transit (Aet) is now a preferred term, not a USE term.
